If you suspect the crankcase has split, take it to a local friendly garage and ask to use the parts washer for a final clean. Having cleaned off all the dirt, thoroughly examine each case half for cracks. If you suspect a crack, heat applied for a few seconds will open it up long enough for you to detect it. It is more likely to be on the left half of the case as the main oil gallery runs between the oil-cooler and the oil pressure sensor. A crack between the oil pressure sender hole and the top rear cylinder head stud is relatively common, as is a crack in the bell housing next to no. 3 cylinder. Also check inside the bell housing of the right case half. If in any doubt take the case to an air-cooled Volks-wagen specialist.

The other possible cause for concern could be the main bearing seats. If, on examination, you find ridges, particularly in the centre of where the main bearing shells sit in the case, then the case will need to be align-bored (line-bored) by a specialist. Again, if in doubt, show it to a specialist.

The thread holding the cylinder head studs can also fail, resulting in the head becoming loose. This can sometimes be detected by the engine producing a chuffing noise when running. The thread can be repaired by having steel inserts known as case-savers fitted by a specialist. From 1971 these were fitted to all engines at the factory.
